My 1954 Buick Model(s): Special

I came across a Skylark on Ebay, advertised as a car used in the Eddie Murphy- Steve Martin movie Bowfinger. Interesting case, it sold at Barrett Jackson in 2001 for 45K- not a bad deal, but was advertised as a #1- no way From the pictures, I would give it a #3. Most cars are bumped up a grade or two, the seller is advertising it as a #2 on ebay. There is nothing wrong with a #3, that would be a very nice driver. For a #2 it would have to be in exceptional condition and for a #1, the car has to be judged. I like the idea of it having been in a major movie, so I have to go rent Bowfinger. Unfortunately the movie clips of the car I have googled show a 53 Skylark, so the Movie story is a bit suspect. It could be true but I would want some proof. Now the 56 valve covers right away flag an engine swap- not unussual, but there was no white and red interior, so the car is definitely not a "correct" Skylark. I would still be OK with that if the Bowfinger story could be proven. But, as is always the case, the deeper you dig the more problems you find. If you see a problem in a glamour shot, lord knows it's the tip of an iceberg. The restoration was probably a paint and interior, perhaps the new motor. But "restored" can mean alot of things.
The undercarriage has the ussual Tar undercoat, so at best it was what I would call a cosmetic rehab. To me restored means the car was completely dissasembled and gone through. Again, nothing wrong with a cosmetic job but that is a #3. #2 cars are extremely well preserved or completely restored and you have to have a car judged (we all think our cars are #1 or #2) by a major independant collector organization to make that claim.
Anyhow, I would say the car is still cool, and if the Bowfinger angle checks out I would like to see where the car ends up!
